7-Step Approach for One-to-One Coaching

The Springboards 7-Step Approach to identifying, benchmarking, and eliminating language and communication challenges. It is a comprehensive and holistic approach to coaching internationals that brings out their best-- and the company’s best.

Who is this for?

The 7-Step Approach for One to One Coaching is ideal for companies that are looking for the best way to help a foreign-born employee get to the next level of their career.

How does it work? What are the 7 Steps?

1. Pre-Assessment

In this first step we walk you through the needs of your employee who may need help with Business Communication skills, English Language proficiency, Cross Cultural competencies, or some combination of all three. Company goals for the employee are also generally discussed at this stage. The Pre-Assessment is done through a phone call.

Time: 30 minutes (complimentary)

2. Observation:

We get right down to business with your employee setting up an on-site, telephonic, or web conferenced practice session where target challenges identified in the Pre-Assessment are observed, recorded, diagnosed and practiced. Some areas generally explored are: meetings, presentations, e-mails, and professional correspondence. This takes place in Session One. Sessions typically run at 1.5 hours.

3. Benchmark Beginnings:

Springboards and the employee identify challenges from the Observation step, discuss short and long-term goals, and evaluate an outline of the coaching in view. At this stage, we might also recommend the addition of a peer review assessment and suggest that 2-3 colleagues or advisers be selected in order to collect feedback on the employee’s professional communication. Springboards collaborates with the company, employee sponsor, and employee directly, in order to solicit peer feedback. Through a holistic approach, we use self, peer, and coach feedback report summaries before, during, and even after the coaching to ensure language and communication goals are met. This takes place in Session Two.

4. Realigning the Coaching

Once the benchmarking period is complete, we draw from several of the following sources to further customize the coaching: peer review feedback, videotaped sessions, self feedback, coach feedback, and documented communication challenges that had organically arisen in the first session. This takes place in Session Three and throughout the coaching program.

5. Midpoint: Before-and-After Review

At this level the employee has had much practice with the target communications and should begin to show noticeable improvement. Through a before-and-after analysis of videotaping, audio recordings, or writing samples used in the Observation step, we are able to help the employee see tangible progress in their communication in just a few weeks’ time.

6. Final Review

Much like in the Benchmarking Beginnings, Springboards checks in with the same peers and uses the same set of questions included in the peer review at the beginning of the coaching. This is usually the most critical round of feedback for the employee and gives the most long-term view of visible gains in their overall communication improvement.

Peer Time Commitment: 10-15 minutes by phone

7. Follow Up

We want to guarantee that communication and professional development gains are there to stay. Springboards will be in touch with the company, the employee, and peers interviewed in Benchmark Beginnings and the Final Review in order to do a final check in on the employee’s progress. Based on the feedback we receive, we summarize the findings into an anonymous report and connect with the employee sponsor or Human Resources to share the results.

Timeframe: 3-6 months after completion of the coaching program
